Frequently Asked Questions

How often should my chimney be cleaned?

There is no set rule on this. The level and type of build up in the chimney is dependant on a number of factors: burning properly seasoned wood, the location and height of the chimney and how the chimney drafts are all factors. I recommend having your chimney cleaned after 60 fires. A professional chimney sweep will be able to recognise any areas of concern and advise on a cleaning schedule.
The best time for cleaning the chimney is in the spring. If repairs or maintenance are required there is time to schedule this work and then the system is ready for use for the next burning season. Long wait times can occur when the cleaning is left till the fall.

What do you think about these Chimney Sweeping Logs?

They can be a useful tool in maintaining the chimney. The logs contain chemicals that act as drying agents that react with creosote deposits and convert them to a deposit that is more easily removed by brushing. Unfortunately the impression given by the name is that this product cleans the chimney. This is not the case and you should still have your chimney cleaned professionally. If there are significant creosote deposits in the chimney a professional sweep will be able to recognise the type of deposit and give advice to educate the homeowner on ways to prevent or reduce such deposits forming.
